Can we just take a moment to look at the Django Unchained tagline?

DjangoUnchained I think this pretty much sums up everything that is wrong with this film. Had it just been “The D is silent.” It would have been a funny, cool and sophisticated tagline, however the addition of the second half ruins what the first half is trying to say and turns something delicate and intelligent into a meaningless bloodbath. There’s something good trying to get out here, but it just gets drowned in blood and guns.

I went to see this film just yesterday, and I can honestly say that I did really enjoy it. Not because it was clever or subtextual or even particularly humourous, but because it was indeed an unapologetically violent and outrageous film and it did pull off that carnage particularly well. I wouldn’t call it a ‘good’ film, as such, but it is easy to sit down and bask in some Tarantino action.
I was disappointed, however. The hype I witnessed (‘the new Pulp Fiction!’) was just that: exaggerated, baseless hyperbole. As far as Quentin’s films go, Django was closer to Death Proof than Pulp Fiction or Inglorious Basterds. I also expected more of Christoph Waltz, as his bounty hunting persona failed to provide the comedic overtones I have come at almost expect from him.
